Wills and Trusts - planning for the futureA successful morning's training was held on 29 June 2016 with Philip Warford of Renaissance Legal with regard to this subject. He talked about why it is so important to write a will and how to go about setting up a trust for disabled children. This session will be run again at some point in the future.
This training ran for the second time in September 2017 and was again enjoyed by all who attended. |
SEN Support and EHC Plans with Amaze
The East Sussex Independent Support service is now offered by Amaze. Amaze offered a chance to find out more about Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)in these 3 well attended sessions around East Sussex. There was a presentation about the process of an EHCP, the timeline and how Amaze can help with the process. There was plenty of time for questions, and an opportunity to talk to the Independent Supporters about the way their free service can help families with all aspects of EHCPs. Three sessions were held in Newhaven, Hastings and Eastbourne throughout September 2016. |
If you are a parent or carer of a child or young person who may not be able to make decisions about their welfare and finances now or in the future, you will need to consider the best ways to protect them as they move to adulthood.
Philip Warford, Lawyer and specialist in planning for the future of disabled & vulnerable people, talked through who can make decisions on behalf of another person, the key principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, Powers of Attorney and how the Court of Protection might help. This session along with the Wills and Trusts above will be run every six months. |
Home to school transport is no longer guaranteed for post 16 pupils (as they leave Year 11). Budgets are tight, criteria tighter, and families are expected to make their own arrangements to get their child to school where possible, or to work with the Local Authority to encourage their child to travel independently where appropriate.
In March 2017 at Sussex Downs College we ran a session with the SEND Transport Project Manager and the Independent Travel Team Leader from East Sussex County Council. A number of parents who attended were able to learn about the recent changes to East Sussex’s SEND Transport policy, and understand how this would affect their families. Visit our Home to School Transport page to see a number of questions and answers raised at that event. To find out more about Independent Travel Training visit our webpage. |
Following a survey ESPACC carried out last year on personal budgets, which showed us that families are asking for more information and clarification, we held a Personal Budgets event on 29 March 2017.
We found out more about personal budgets - what they are, how they work and eligibility? How can a personal budget be used in a flexible way to improve a child's life experiences and help them meet their outcomes as well as supporting the whole family. Andrew Baxter, Children's Lead, from In - Control, provided us with a wealth of knowledge around the topic of personal budgets at this event.
